Overview
The National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Basalt Fiber Production is a national innovative platform established in November 2011 under the support of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The center has ever since become an important platform for basalt fiber R&D and industrialization. It is positioned to be a high-end platform that leads the R&D of key technologies of basalt fiber production in China and even in the world and promotes industrial development. The Center takes a leading role in various programs including the National key R&D Programs, the 973 Program, the National Science and Technology Support Program, Jiangsu Province Innovative Scholars Climbing Project, and has been granted numerous projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSF). It successfully solved the stability problem of basalt which facilitates a widespread industrial application of this material. The center has also drafted multiple national and industrial standards including the Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer for Structural Reinforcement, the Structural Basalt Fiber Mesh, the Basalt Fiber Codes, and the Basalt Fiber and Product for Highway Engineering. Its findings lead the top prize from the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC), the second prize in the State Science and Technology Progress Award, the Innovation and Promotion Award of CIUR, and the first prize in the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education (MOE).

Vision
It takes the lead in basalt fiber technology innovation and industrialization, levels up industrial innovation, promotes the transfer of research outcomes into engineering technologies by connecting the basalt fiber industry with associated sectors, and attracts talents to drive the industrial development.
Facilities
The center is capable for various tests from structural to material scale at both macro and micro levels. It is equipped with a wide range of facilities including platinum-rhodium crucibles, platinum-rhodium single hole wire-drawing crucibles, high-performance variable frequency wire drawing machines, single wire strength testers, full-spectrum direct-reading spectrometers (ICP), high temperature viscometers, integrated thermal analyzers, thermal mechanical analyzers, transmission electron microscopes (TEMs), FTIR, X-ray diffractometers, field emission scanning electron microscopes (FESEMs), temperature gradient furnaces, high temperature furnaces, freeze/thaw chambers, antifracture testing machines, compression-testing machines, Fourier infrared analyzers, acid, alkali and salt immersion tanks, dry-wet circulation boxes, salt spray chambers, creep testers, counterforce devices of long- and short-term performance testing of FRP cables, MTS double-table vibrostand (large-tonnage), and large versatile structure testers.
