The National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Construction (the Center) was jointly established by various schools of SEU including the SCE, the School of Electrical Engineering, the School of Instrument Science and Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Engineering, the School of Architecture, the School of Electronic Science and Engineering, the School of Information Science and Engineering, and the School of Transportation. It is in the charge of Prof. Lu Chunfang, former vice minister of railways, adjunct professor of SEU, and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and Prof. Wu Gang, vice president of SEU.

Inauguration of the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Construction

Intelligent construction plays a vital part in the development and technological innovation of major infrastructure and relevant industries in the future. It is the only route for China to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction, structural improvement, industrial upgrade, and major innovation. In the context of China's new urbanization strategy and the Jiangsu Construction 2025 strategy, intelligent construction is charged with a mission to achieve high efficiency, quality, performance, and benefits. Meanwhile, intelligent construction is also a typical energy-saving and environment-friendly way of production. Highly efficient development and application cater to the needs for a resource-saving and environment-friendly society, the requirements of low-carbon economy, and the overall needs of China to strategically incubate emerging industries and take a dominant position in technological development.

Infrastructure is the foundation for economic development. Major infrastructure includes municipal and public facilities (underground utility tunnels, high-rise buildings, and large span spatial structures), rail transit systems (bridges, tunnels, and rails), major energy projects (power transmission towers, nuclear power plant containment shells, and LNG tanks). Intelligent construction of major infrastructure is a common key issue in the world. By integrating its advantages in civil engineering, electric engineering, instrumental science, computing, architecture, electronics, information, and transportation, SEU plans to study the key technologies for intelligent construction of major infrastructure including the R&D of high-end intelligent construction equipment and services throughout the entire intelligent construction process. The plan has gained the financial and spatial support from the High and New Tech Development Zone of Jiangning District of Nanjing. It will cooperate with leading enterprises in intelligent construction including Beijing Urban Construction Design & Development Group Co., Limited and Nari Group Corporation, and follow an overall R&D path of basic application-engineering application technology-industrialization technology. It aims to solve the issues that curb the development of intelligent construction of core infrastructure like public facilities, rail transit systems, and major energy projects, and strives to become a world-class intelligent construction research center.
