Students in SCE have been very active in attending international and domestic civil engineering competitions, such as those held by the ASCE (including the Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, and Professional Paper Competitions), the International College Student Invitational Competition of Technology Simulation for High-speed Railway Construction, the International Engineering Mechanics Contest, the National Structural Design Contest, and National Geotechnical Engineering Competition.

(c) 2019 International High-speed Railway Competition

(d) 2019 National Structural Design Contest

Statistics of awards received in competitions from 2015 to 2019

It is found that Civil Engineering accounts for the largest proportion (46%), followed by Engineering Mechanics (35%). For Construction Management, the percentage is 16%, and the percentage of Water Engineering is the smallest (3%). Since many students in Civil Engineering attend the engineering mechanics competitions as well, the awards of Engineering Mechanics rank No.2 with a relatively large proportion.

Competitions Organized by SCE

To train the practical skills and innovation ability of undergraduate students in SCE, structural competitions are organized by SCE every year. Meanwhile, the competitions are specified for students in different grades, and the talented students will be selected to attend the provincial, national, and international competitions.

A great number of awards have been obtained in the student competitions. It is shown that the number of international awards is increasing rapidly in the past five years. Some awards are achieved in international competitions. For example, in the 2018 ASCE student competition held by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the students in SCE obtain three firsts (in efficiency, stiffness, and presentation) in the steel bridge program, and the silver medal in the water processing program. The number of national awards obtained is relatively steady and increased to 21 in 2019. It is noted that the students were the meritorious winners in the 2019 national structural design contest, which involved more than 100 universities. For provincial awards, a breakthrough was made in 2018, and the number of these awards reached 41.
