Engineering Mechanics
The discipline of mechanics at SEU was established in 1950s under the leadership of the older generation of mechanics scientists including Professors Liang Zhiming and Hu Qianshan. SEU started to offer undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral programs in mechanics in 1960, 1964 and 2003, respectively. So far, it has fostered a large number of college faculty members and talents in mechanics. Mechanics is a key discipline of Jiangsu Province. SEU offers post-doctoral and post-graduate programs in the first-level discipline of mechanics, and doctoral programs in two second-level disciplines of engineering mechanics and solid mechanics. Also, it is equipped with a number of key research and teaching platforms including Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Engineering Mechanics and Jiangsu Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Mechanics.
Multiple fields of study are offered in each second-level discipline such as solid mechanics, engineering mechanics, and dynamics and control, forming a synergistic learning framework. Centered on both basic and applied research, these disciplines aim to serve major engineering projects such as national key projects and defense projects.
The faculty members have achieved basic theoretical outcomes with international influence in terms of multi-scale mechanics research on materials and structural damage, and successfully used these research outcomes to assess the structures and predict the fatigue life of major projects like the Runyang Bridge. They have also made technological breakthroughs in experimental solid mechanics and micro/nano-mechanics, solving a series of difficulties in remote displacement measurement, submicron deformation measurement, and 3D dynamic and static deformation measurement of large structures. What's more, they have had important findings in dynamics and structural system identification, and applied them to structural health monitoring of major projects and vibration control of satellite structures. In the past five years, the faculty members have undertaken 184 research projects, including 52 national projects such as major research projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSF), with an average annual research grant of RMB 14.12 million. Applications of the research outcomes have brought significant economic and social benefits to the country.
The discipline is staffed by 30 faculty members, including 11 professors and 10 associate professors. 29 of them hold doctoral degrees, and 25 are under 45 years old. The teaching team also boasts one National Distinguished Young Scholar, one teacher selected for the National Thousand Talents Plan, three faculty members included in the Thousand Youth Talents Plan, three faculty members listed in the Program for New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, and 15 faculty members selected for high-caliber talent fostering programs like the Outstanding Youth Foundation of Jiangsu Province, forming a disciplinary team with provincial and ministerial young and middle-aged experts as the core.
