Graduate Study

The master's student training process usually lasts three years, and the doctoral student training process usually lasts four years.Master's students should obtain at least 31 credits before graduation, including 9 from general education courses, at least 17 from professional discipline courses, and 5 from non-professional discipline courses. 

Ph.D. students should obtain at least 19 credits before graduation, including 5 from general education courses, at least eight from professional discipline courses, and 6 from non-professional discipline courses (about 32%).

The entire graduate study contains the following key steps:

Registration

Graduate students should arrive on time at the beginning of each semester, register online and check in with supervisor.

Plan of Study

Within two weeks after enrollment, new students should carefully formulate a plan of study under the guidance of their supervisors and submit it online.

Course Selection

Each semester, one shall submit the course selection form online within the specified time.

Course Study

The required course credits for master's students should be completed within one academic year after admission; all course credits for doctoral students should be completed within one academic year after admission.

Hands-on Session

Academic degree students should participate in the necessary innovation and entrepreneurship practice training during their study period. They shall submit a summary report to their supervisors for signature and approval, and then submit it to the graduate secretary for archiving.

Students enrolled with master of engineering should participate in professional practice during the study period. They shall pass the professional practice assessment before entering the dissertation session.

Seminars

Before the mid-term examination, graduate students should attend at least 8 lecture series, among which each graduate student must attend at least 1 lecture each on scientific ethics and academic ethics, law and mental health. Graduate students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and international students should take the series at least 3 times before the midterm examination.

Academic Activities

Doctoral students should actively participate in at least 8 academic seminars and give at least 4 academic presentations within their  disciplines during their studies. Of the 4 presentations, at least one should be in foreign language, one should be outside of China, and two should be important academic conferences in the field.

Master's students should participate in at least two academic activities within the scope of their discipline and write one research paper.

Qualifying Exam   

The qualify should be completed before the end of the third and fourth semester for master's and doctoral students, respectively.  The qualifying exam should be passed least six months for master's students and at least one year for doctoral students before applying for defense.

Applying for Defense 

Doctoral students should publish a certain number of research papers, or other equivalent research achievements before awarding the degree which includes blind review of the dissertation.

The assessment of the achievements of master students are carried out according to the requirements of the degree evaluation committee of their department or institute.

Review of Dissertation

All doctoral dissertations are reviewed blindly. A certain percentage of master’s theses will be randomly selected for blind review.

All graduate students must upload the finalized dissertation in blind review format before applying for the dissertation defense. The defense will not be organized until all reviews are returned and approved.

Defense of Dissertation

(1) Graduate students should complete their dissertation defense within the time specified in the training program. Any early or postponed defense must be approved by the Graduate School;

(2) The dissertation defense shall be conducted in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
