Municipal Engineering

The governments at the national and sub-national levels have continuously increased investment in water engineering projects and municipal infrastructure construction, which shows that the discipline of Municipal Engineering plays a prominent role in national economic and social development, and has good development prospects.

It features a full line of teaching and research areas including urban water industry and water environment; urban air pollution control; solid waste engineering, treatment, disposal and utilization; urban fire protection and fire safety; water engineering structures; and underground engineering. All these areas represent high development value, broad market and social needs.

The department's main tasks include: 1) undertaking international collaborative projects, national science and technology research, basic research, and research projects at the provincial and municipal levels; 2) cooperating with all levels of governments to address major technical problems concerning local economic development, undertaking relevant science and technology projects, and providing medium- to long-term plans, technical advice and services for government agencies; 3) undertaking large- and medium-sized municipal infrastructure projects as well as associated pollution control projects in the capacity of the contractor, designer, operator and technical adviser; 4) organizing academic conferences at various levels within the research community as well as internal and external academic exchanges; and 5) combining discipline construction, post-graduate education and culture building.

Recently, the department has been selected to undertake national 863 projects, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and about ten other research projects. It has received about 10 technological and academic awards, and another ten invention patents and utility model patents. It has also published hundreds of scientific and technological papers and academic monographs. The discipline of Municipal Engineering has been identified as one of the key disciplines in Jiangsu Province.

In 2022, the Water Supply and Drainage Science & Engineering discipline in the department was selected as First-class discipline and Top-notch Academic Programs Project of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions. Taking this opportunity, the Department of Municipal Engineering clarified and determined the objectives and direction of its development. It strengthened the crossover between disciplines and promoted the reform of talent cultivation. At the same time, it focused on the industry-study-research combination, and promoted the development of the discipline. Through these enhancements and reforms, the department has further increased its national influence.

There are 15 faculty members in the Department of Municipal Engineering, including 8 professors (researchers) and 7 associate professors (associate researchers). All of the faculty members have Ph.D. degrees, and 17.6% have got overseas degrees. On the whole, they are united, progressive, strong, dynamic and innovative. Through years of efforts, a number of them and their achievements have been renowned both locally and internationally.
